A few weeks ago a Dallas group from our Classic Children’s Book Club ventured to Mars Hill Farm to go along with our “Yummy Foods” week theme. This farm is so special and only 30 minutes from the city so I wanted to share it with everyone!

DoSayGive Summer Book Club Outing

If you are looking for a little family outing this summer, Mars Hill Farm is just a short drive south of downtown Dallas. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can cut fresh flowers, show your children all their farm animals, even bring a picnic breakfast or lunch and enjoy the picturesque surroundings at the picnic tables. It’s the perfect introduction to farm life for little ones!

The story behind the organic Mars Hill Farm is not the typical “owners got tired of city life so set out to be farmers.” Instead they wanted to offer refugees in Dallas a bit of familiarity in their newfound city life by providing a a place for them to grow their own food.

Using sustainable farming methods set forth in the Bible, the owners hope to create a model for other farms to emulate, proving that they can stay solvent while treating their employees well and paying them above market wages. They want to reframe the narrative around refugees and show that they can be an asset to our economy, especially when given the opportunity to thrive.

While they didn’t set out to be farmers, the little farm they have nurtured is quite beautiful. Mars Hill Farm grows organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs which are available along with their fresh cut flowers at the Dallas Farmers Market and White Rock Market.
Mars Hill Farm also offers fresh flower delivery in select Dallas areas, including weekly and monthly subscriptions (which would be an amazing gift idea!). They also raise grass-fed beed.
The owners and staff at Mars Hill Farm were so great with the small children in our book club, telling them all about the process of growing the fruits and vegetables and about all the animals. We even got to try some of their vegetables and herbs (which you can purchase produce to bring home). Definitely reach out to them if your group wants an educational tour. They also offer event rentals.
We had the best time at Mars Hill Farm and wrapped up our visit with story time (with one of the books on our book club, of course!).
Thank you so much to Mars Hill Farm for having us out and for the book club members who joined us. Loved meeting y’all in person!
