A few weeks ago a Dallas group from our Classic Children’s Book Club ventured to Mars Hill Farm to go along with our “Yummy Foods” week theme. This farm is so special and only 30 minutes from the city so I wanted to share it with everyone!
If you are looking for a little family outing this summer, Mars Hill Farm is just a short drive south of downtown Dallas. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can cut fresh flowers, show your children all their farm animals, even bring a picnic breakfast or lunch and enjoy the picturesque surroundings at the picnic tables. It’s the perfect introduction to farm life for little ones!
The story behind the organic Mars Hill Farm is not the typical “owners got tired of city life so set out to be farmers.” Instead they wanted to offer refugees in Dallas a bit of familiarity in their newfound city life by providing a a place for them to grow their own food.
Using sustainable farming methods set forth in the Bible, the owners hope to create a model for other farms to emulate, proving that they can stay solvent while treating their employees well and paying them above market wages. They want to reframe the narrative around refugees and show that they can be an asset to our economy, especially when given the opportunity to thrive.
Lee!! I never saw this – just was googling the farm and it came up!! What a wonderful, beautiful write-up!!
Oh I am sorry you never saw it! I thought I emailed you about it but I guess I didn’t! Thank you again for having us!
