Sometimes when I need a little help in the eloquence department, I often find that writers from the past have said what I wanted to say much better than I ever could. So today I’m posting my favorite quotes about mothers that you might want to share in your Mother’s Day cards this year.
Before I had three children, I used to read a lot of biographies (some day I will again!). But I was always so moved when I read quotes from great men and women in our history that attributed everything they had become to their mothers. Like Abraham Lincoln saying “all that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother.” What a testament to his mother, right? Will my children say that about me someday? Thought-provoking and convicting all at the same time!
Here are some of my favorite quotes about mothers:
“All that I am or hope to be I owe to my angel mother. I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.” Abraham Lincoln
My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw.
All I am I owe to my mother.
I attribute all my success in life to the moral,
intellectual and physical education
I received from her. George Washington
“Perhaps the greatest social service that can be rendered by anybody to the country and to mankind is to bring up a family.” George Bernard Shaw
“Homemaker is the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only — to support the ultimate career.” C. S. Lewis
A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them. Victor Hugo
Whatever else is unsure in this stinking dunghill of a world a mother’s love is not. James Joyce
Women know
The way to rear up children (to be just)
They know a simple, merry, tender knack
Of tying sashes, fitting baby shoes,
And stringing pretty words that make no sense,
And kissing full sense into empty words.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“The mother’s heart is the child’s school-room.” Henry Ward Beecher
“A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”
Agatha Christie
“My mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed that I base my life on, and that is the belief that the ability to achieve starts in your mind.”
Michael Jordan
“When I was a child, my mother said to me, ‘If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general. If you become a monk you’ll end up as the pope.’ Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.”
Pablo Picasso
“You too, my mother, read my rhymes, For love of unforgotten times, And you may chance to hear once more, The little feet along the floor.” Robert Lewis Stevenon
“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.” Proverbs 17:6
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:” Proverbs 31:28
A few thoughts on writing Mother’s Day cards:
1. Whatever you write, be sure it’s from the heart. It doesn’t have to be lengthy, just something that shows your true love and appreciation. Give at least one memory or specific reason why you love your mom. It might take a little more effort than just writing “Happy Mother’s’ Day – I love you” but I promise, you will be glad you did and so will your mom. These are the cards that are saved for a lifetime!
2. This year remember the mothers who have lost children or babies. A nice card, even a short email, means so much on what I am sure is a very hard day.
3. If you are married, encourage your husbands to write a kind note to their moms (boy moms will appreciate this, I know!).
