Our Charming Stay at the Historic Hill House

A few weekends ago the owners of The Historic Hill House asked my family to come and enjoy the property for a few days and share any feedback with them (and y’all!). So I am excited to do that today on the blog. The Historic Hill House is a wonderful place for couples, families, executive retreats, and even family reunions.

About three hours south of Dallas (and an hour north of Houston) the Historic Hill House is one of the few remaining inns from the 19th century. Over 130 years old, the inn has recently been completely restored to its former glory, with no detail left to chance. What was once a stopover for cowboys driving cattle across the prairie is now a charming destination for couples and families looking for a simple getaway in the country, with amenities that are all top-notch.

The property is steeped in history (which y’all know I love!). From the period decor in the main house to how they honor the original owners with photos in the entry way. The cottages are new but seamlessly fit in among the rolling hills and oaks. I love how so much thought was put into making even the “new” things special. Like how the mantles on the cottage’s fireplaces were made with wood from the original house. Even the food, all made by the Inn’s private chef, is carefully chosen to incorporate local ingredients and heritage. Did y’all see this photo I posted on Instastories of my husband’s breakfast? He has not stopped talking about it!

My girls had the best time experiencing a real bed and breakfast for the first time. All meals are included with a stay at the Historic Hill House. Breakfast and dinner are served in the light-filled dining room and lunch can be made into a picnic, brought to the pool, or eaten on one of the many serene porches on the property. Dinners is a four-course meal and snacks are plentiful (hello homemade Margarita and Sangria popsicles by the pool!).

There’s resort-style pool at The Historic Hill House and the first floor of the Pool Barn has a game room with a t.v., puzzles, books, and walkie talkies (a huge hit as the girls ran free around the grounds!). There’s also a two-mile trail and plans are in the works for a farm to supply the restaurant and a barn to house horses.

The inn can arrange for a masseuse to come to your room or arrange for a professional artist to give you a lesson painting the native flowers. But for the most part, The Historic Hill House is a place to slow down your pace, take in the beautiful surroundings, and enjoy spending time with your loved ones. My husband and I kept commenting how much we needed this weekend to slow down and just be … and have someone else make all the meals!

One that note, The Historic Hill House is adults-only most of the year, except during the summer when they open up to families with children. There were several other families on the property during Memorial Day Weekend and it was fun how all the children played so well together. Because the inn only has 8 cottages and rooms, and sits on 108 rolling acres, it never felt crowded. And we didn’t worry if our children ran to the main house to get some gummy bears (the biggest hit in their eyes!).

We stayed in one of the beautiful cottages on the property. The rooms in each cottage have a plush, king bed with a pull-out couch (and still plenty of room for a pack n play!). There is also a kitchenette and large bathroom and porch with white, wooden rocking chairs where you might see some bunnies and deer while sipping your morning coffee.

We have a large family so had two connecting rooms (each cottage has two rooms that can connect). But one room is plenty big for a family of four. Just note: the price is based on 2-person occupancy so there may be an upcharge for children, especially because meals are included.

The Historic Hill House is also a unique place for an executive retreat or family reunion. A place where you can all be together – and have the place all to yourselves the but not feel on top of each other. For family reunions it’s nice because no one has to be in charge of the meals. Everything is taken care of and Chef Jimmy can tailor a menu to your group. P.S. The bananas foster pancakes were HEAVEN!

If you make a summer vacation out of it, consider stopping at the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park about an hour west of the inn, where there is a museum commemorating the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The Sam Houston Memorial Museum is even closer.
