10 Vacation Packing Tips from a Stylist

1. Know Your Destination and Duration

Start by considering your destination, the length of your stay, and whether you’ll be checking a bag or carrying your suitcase on the plane. For longer trips, Kristi sometimes uses both—a roller mini bag or carry-on with essentials with her and full size rolling suitcase under the plane. She recommends always having a set of clothes and a swimsuit with you on the plane in case your luggage gets lost. And if you are traveling for a wedding, make sure your dress goes in the essentials bag!

2. Pack Smart for a Short Trip

For a few days away, focus on items that can be dressed up or down. A sleeveless black dress with a crossbody bag, good sunglasses, and earrings can be your go-to outfit. Wear trendy sneakers to avoid looking too casual. Pack essentials like a swimsuit, a change of clothes, and a dress for any events. This keeps packing light and manageable.

3. Beach Vacation Must-Haves

Kristi loves dresses for their lightweight and foldable nature. A versatile caftan can double as a dress or cover-up, paired with gold sandals for a chic look. A sarong wrap is also essential, as it can be styled in various ways around the pool, even with a white blouse or tank for lunch.

4. Pack Versatile Footwear

Choose footwear that serves multiple purposes. You could get away with two shoes: a great metallic sandal and a cute sneaker (that is comfy enough for walks).  Metallic sandal thong flip-flops are great for the pool and can be dressed up with a cute dress. Kristi advises wearing your heaviest shoes on the plane to save space in your bag.

7. For Longer Trips, Pack Interchangeable Outfits

For longer trips, opt for pieces that can be mixed and matched, incorporating black and white pieces. A short set or a silkier set can be versatile; you could wear the bottom with a white tank. Never underestimate the classic look of an all white outfit. Bring white jeans and fun tops but also a great white blouse. You can find a great white blouse from many places including Veronica Beard and the Gap. P.S. These wrinkle-free Nordstrom joggers paired with a white blouse is a great option for travel.

8. Don’t Rush Packing

Kristi advises pulling out your clothes a week or a few days in advance to see what you really love and need. That way you have time to get something if you see a gap in your wardrobe. As you pack, consider if you’ll be shopping on your trip and leave room in your suitcase for new purchases.

9. Use Smart Packing Techniques

Pack nice garments carefully depending on their fabric, using a plastic dry cleaner sleeve for nicer garments. Kristi recommends keeping them on hangers and folding over in suitcase or rolling. Use packing cubes and travel-sized toiletries from brands like Sephora and Ulta.

10. Take Photos of Outfits

Particularly for longer trips, take pictures of your outfits as you pack and keep on your phone so you don’t have to spend time remembering how you planned to wear something. This helps maximize your suitcase real estate and saves you time getting ready on vacation.
